These topics are ones that students have explored in past years. I have given you ideas for inquiry questions that go with each topic. You can and should add to this list if possible. A good Inquiry project is driven by the question not whatever facts you happen to come across as you research. Think of yourself as an Investigator of History. You must solve the case!
Temples of Ancient Greece & Rome
How were the ancient temples built? What were their main architectural features? What was their purpose in society? How were the temples of the Greeks & Romans similar and different? Comparing Mythology of Greece and Rome What Gods and Goddesses were most popular among the Greeks and Romans? How did Greek Mythology influence the Romans? What role did the myths play in the people's lives? Where do we see mythology in our life today? Amazing Aqueducts The Romans were known for building amazing structures. Their system of aqueducts and roads still exist today and were one of the main things that helped their empire to spread. Research about this ancient plumbing system and teach us how it worked! The Arts Sculpture, painting, jewlery, vases. What types of artistry did the Ancients leave behind and what does it tell us about how they lived? What was it made from? How do we know? Research about all things art in the Ancient lands of Greece or Rome or both! Democracy vs. Emperors! How did the Ancient Greeks and Romans govern themselves? There isn't one answer. They had many kinds of government over time. From democracy to crazy kings and emperors! Research more about this. |
Daily Life in Ancient Greece and Rome
What was it like to live in Ancient times? What foods would I have eaten? How would I have spend my days? Would it matter how much money I had? If I was a girl or a boy? Where would I have lived? Gone to school? Played with? Wars and Weapons of the Greeks and Romans (You may want to focus on Greece or Rome as this can be a rather big topic.) What was ancient war like for the Greeks and Romans? Who fought in these wars? What materials were available and how did that effect what weapons they could make? How did the geography of the Mediterranean region effect wars? What big wars were fought? Who were the main enemies of the Greeks or Romans? Greece vs. Egypt What similarities can I find between Ancient Greece and Ancient Egypt (which you studied in 4th grade) How do their social structure, government, architecture, daily life, and religion compare? Can I find any evidence that the Ancient Egyptians impacted the Greeks in any way? Science and Medicine What kind of medicine did they have in Ancient Days? What would happen if you got sick? Did they understand what we understand today? Research about science and medicine in Ancient Greece and Rome (or both) and teach us all about it. |
Gladiator! The Roman Coliseum
Blood and Guts! The Gladiators were fighters and heroes. Or were they? Delve into the sordid history of the Ancient Roman Gladiators and the various challenges they faced. Such as fighting for their life against hungry tigers and each other. Travel and Trade Cultures impact each other in many ways. Who did the Greeks and Romans trade with? how did the geography of the land impact that? What did explorers find when they traveled to far away lands? Adventure? New food? Research to find out! The Olympics and Sports When did the Olympics start? Who could compete and what games did they play? Were there prizes? How do these compare to today? Did they have sports other than the Olympics in Ancient Greece? Did the Romans continue the Olympic tradition? |
